Chapter Six
The door slammed open, and I accidentally threw the book I was reading over my shoulder, almost hitting the cooling brownies I had just taken out of the oven.
"Geez, Rosey!" I shouted, my heart pounding. "What the hell?"
"You," said Rosey from the doorway, brown eyes wide and angry, black hair looking frazzled. Hadn't she been wearing a pink sweater before? I stared at her soft blue one, words barely registering in my brain.
"...fucking promised," she growled, low and throaty. "So where is it?"
"Where is what? What are you talking about?" I bent down to get my book, a nice little cozy mystery involving dogs, and my heart sank. She knew. How the hell did she know already?!
"My Templar costume. A white tunic with a red cross on it. You should know what I'm talking about, since you wore it earlier today."
"Um..." I kept looking at my book, as if it could help me out of this situation.
"Lillian you're a shit liar. I know you took it."
"That's such a harsh word, 'took.' I just...borrowed it for a little bit," I stammered. When she went to full pissed off mode, it took a while for her to calm down.
"I. Know."
"How?" I asked, frowning. "I only ran into one person, and he was a Villain."
"He told others," Rosey answered.
"Well, shit," I muttered, my checks heating up a little. "I was hoping he wouldn't tell anyone, since I wasn't exactly at my best."
"You've never been to a Hero class, Lillian. You don't have a best to be at! You can't play at being Super!"
"It's not 'play,'" I said, my stomach clenching. "And honestly, I didn't promise you that I wouldn't go out. I said that yes, I could wait. It didn't mean that I was going to. Could, not would."
"Do you have any idea of how dangerous some of those Villains are?!"
"Yes! Yes, I do actually!" I was about to say that my backpack knew too, but I bit my tongue on that information. "I read the same news as you, see the same fights as you! Why do you think I want to help get rid of Villains?!"
"That idea won't work," Rosey said, her voice suddenly sounding tired, frail, and world-weary.
"Rosey?" That sudden switch worried me. "You okay?"
"You can't get rid of half an equation," she continued. "If you have sun, you have darkness. Happiness, sadness. Supers and Villains are just two sides of the same coin, and if you want to be the White Knight, then you need a Black Knight to fight against."
"No, we don't need Villains to appreciate Supers!" I argued, my voice getting higher and louder. "Supers can fight disasters, emergencies, poverty, and stuff! They don't need Villains, and we don't need bad to know that there's good."
Rosey stood at the door, silent, so I pressed my point.
"Villains are evil, destructive psychopaths. Nobody needs a Villain."
"Not all of them," Rosey mumbled, not looking me in the eye.
"Look at the ones that are registered at our school, that are
